Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?
Sales tax (used in the US) is charged only at the final point of sale to the consumer. VAT (value added tax, used in Europe and many other countries) is collected at every stage of the supply chain but ultimately paid by the end consumer. For a shopper the practical effect is the same: a percentage is added to the price of the goods.
Which US states have no sales tax?
Five US states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Note that Alaska allows local municipalities to levy their own sales taxes, so a few local areas still charge a small amount.
How is sales tax calculated?
To add tax: tax amount = pre-tax price x tax rate, and total price = pre-tax price + tax amount. To remove tax from a tax-inclusive price: pre-tax price = tax-inclusive price / (1 + tax rate).
Do online purchases get charged sales tax?
In the US, online retailers are generally required to collect sales tax based on the destination state, following the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair ruling. In the EU, digital purchases are charged VAT of the buyer's country under the One Stop Shop (OSS) scheme.
What is the highest VAT rate in Europe?
Hungary has the highest standard VAT rate in the EU at 27%, followed by Sweden, Denmark and Norway at 25%. Luxembourg has the lowest standard rate at 16%.
How do I calculate tax on an invoice?
To add tax to a net invoice: tax = net price × tax rate, and total = net price + tax. To pull tax out of a tax-inclusive (gross) invoice: net = gross ÷ (1 + tax rate). Example: a £120 invoice at 20% VAT is £100 net plus £20 of VAT.
What's the VAT rate for digital products in the EU?
Digital services — software, streaming, e-books and the like — are charged VAT at the standard rate of the buyer's country, from 16% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, under the EU's One Stop Shop (OSS) scheme.
